Powerful, ball-playing midfielder signed from Newcastle United for ý7million in June 2007. He was handed the task of replacing the retired Alan Shearer as Magpies captain in the summer of 2006, having impressed after moving to Tyneside for ý6.5million the previous June, ending an 18-month spell at Chelsea. He had signed from Charlton Athletic for ý10million but seldom figured in Jose Mourinho's side in 2004/05 due to a foot injury. His work-rate, goal threat and versatility mean he can fit into any formation and he will be looking to reclaim his place in the England squad after linking up again with his former Charlton boss Alan Curbishley.
