Better known just as Alex,joined Chelsea in 2004 but loaned straight out to PSV in Holland were he gained the nickname The Tank, due to his size and net breaking free kicks. On his return in 2007 he still found himself behind Terry and Carvaliho as the two dominant centre backs. Real Madrid put in a bid for 18 million which Chelsea Refused. On Carvalhos departure to Madrid, Alex found himself as John Terrys new partner in defence. A formidable force in the air or with his thunderbolt free kicks he has scored 11 in 85 games.
